Are you looking for cheap beeswax or are you looking for beeswax candles that are going to make you or your customers happy? We get e-mails weekly from companies from China wanting to sell us beeswax. I politely let them know we are not interested. Our beeswax candles are made in Canada. We only use 100% pure Canadian beeswax. We intend for it to stay that way.
I heard a story very recently of a company that chose to try making their candles with cheap beeswax. They likely thought they were doing their customers a favor by bringing in beeswax from China to make less expensive beeswax candles. Well, they got what they paid for and we heard the customers were bringing them back because they were so bad. I heard a similar story from a disgruntled customer who switched to us after a company he had been buying from in the US started to make their candles from cheaper Chinese beeswax.
We aren’t sure what makes the Chinese beeswax these companies are using so bad but we have noticed the color is often not good. It is typically the color often indicative of a low quality wax. We talked to a trustworthy beekeeper in Alberta once about beeswax from China. He said some Chinese honey bees are not allowed to forage on flowers. They are fed sugar water instead. You may find that Chinese beeswax doesn't have much of a natural honey scent, has a lack of color and does not burn well. It may even have a greenish hue to it.
Don’t go there! Here’s what to look for to ensure you have only premium quality beeswax candles:
- Look for a rich yellow-amber beeswax color
- Look for clean wax with no visible particles of dirt or impurities. Look for depth in the finish of the candle. Is it pleasant to touch?
- Is the surface smooth and rich?
- Does it smell pleasantly of natural honey?
- Feel the weight. Does it feel heavy and solid? That’s what you want.
- Make sure there are no cracks, flakes dark wax or white spots as you look beyond the surface of the candle
- Is it overdipped or overdripped? If so it could be hiding inferior wax under the surface.
- Turn it over – are there holes or cavities in the bottom? Avoid these.
- MAKE SURE THE LABEL SAYS 100% PURE BEESWAX - only pure beeswax will 'bloom' as the candle seasons.
