Are Beeswax Candles Cleaner Burning Than Paraffin?

Are Beeswax Candles Cleaner Burning Than Paraffin?

There is a study that says beeswax candles do not burn cleaner than paraffin. The study completed in 2007 entitled the Report on the Okometric Wax and Emissions Study states it has demonstrated that the combustion by-products of all major candle waxes are virtually identical in composition and quality. The study goes on to say that there is a lack of health or air quality concerns with candles.

I would like you to note the list of publishers that jointly released this study. They include the National Candle Association and the National Petrochemical & Refiners Association. Please check out the membership in the National Candle Association list. Not a noticeable beeswax candle maker there that I recognize.

Let’s take a look at some of the ingredients that may be found in paraffin candles. The list may include:

  • Acrolein
  • Benzene (also in cigarettes)
  • Ethanol
  • Formaldehyde (also in cigarettes)
  • Dibutyl phthalate
  • Diethyl phthalate
  • Toluene (also in cigarettes)
  • Styrene
  • Ethyl benzene
  • Naphthalene
  • Benzaldehyde
  • Didecyl phthalate
  • Acetone (also in cigarettes)

What’s in beeswax candles? Honey Candles Ltd. uses only pure natural beeswax.

Some of our customers would not agree with this study. Here are typical messages we received from customers just this month who wanted me to know why they chose beeswax Honey Candles®.

“I was introduced to Honey Candles by a friend who purchased a single column from the Sacramento Co-op. The look, feel, color and smell were all appealing, though once I searched the benefits of burning natural beeswax candles without paraffin, toxic chemicals and artificial additives it became a life choice. My apartment is quite old and full of allergens, so taking care to burn candles that will help diminish the harmful contents of the air is an important step in the right direction.” Kristen, Fair Oaks CA

"I have always used the traditional tealights (paraffin) that I would get from the dollar store but when I realized just how many chemicals I was breathing in I made the switch to beeswax tealights. I was blown away at how much brighter the burn was and much 'cleaner' the air was. I also track my sleep quality nightly and there was an increase in sleep quality since lighting beeswax candles before bed. Definitely worth the investment and I'm very satisfied with my purchase." Bobby, Halifax NS

I think our customers choose beeswax Honey Candles® because they love the smell of them when they burn. They like the beautiful flame and the way beeswax candles create ambiance. I also think they feel confident that they are not putting toxins in the air that they and their families breathe. Congratulations to our customers on your independent thinking and your belief in what we know is a beautiful, natural and clean-burning candle.
