Danish 'Hygge' with Pure Natural Beeswax Candles

Danish 'Hygge' with Pure Natural Beeswax Candles

beeswax candles and Hygge I just heard about ‘hygge’ about a month ago. It was spoken in the same breath as burning candles so that set me off on a research effort to find out what I could. ‘Hygge’ is a Danish term. I am not Danish but my ancestors did come from Norway so I suspect their customs were born from similar roots, climate and their northerly geography. What I’m trying to say they are both darned cold and dark countries from October until March which can be hard on your mental wellbeing. It would make sense that resourceful people would look for ways to make that ‘dark’ time more tolerable and comfortable when possible. I remember my mom telling stories of her Norwegian great grandfather dancing on the top of their stove. Was that 'hygge'? Somehow I think 'hygge' probably is less vigorous.

As I read about ‘hygge’ what was clear is that it is hard to translate into English. What came through was ‘hygge’ is a feeling and there are traditions that evoke ‘hygge’. The Danes want to be comfortable during the dark time of the year. ‘Hygge’ was described as being contented and cozy. It seems that hot food and drink, good friends and family and candles, tons of candles burning contribute to ‘hygge' along with a fire in the fireplace. Sounds like just the thing to chase the wintertime blues away. Typically I’ve noticed Europeans seem to appreciate fine beeswax candles. Beeswax candles emit the natural sweet aroma of warm honey. Danish homes that are burning lots of natural beeswax candles will attain a perpetual sense of wellbeing.

Here in Canada as we are heading into our dark time of winter, especially if you are far north I hope that you are seeking the experience of Danish ‘hygge’ and burning some beautiful pure beeswax candles every evening to create ambiance, warmth, caring and wellbeing.
