- Muddy beeswax with a grey-green cast - you want a yellow-amber beeswax
- Visible signs of dirt or impurities – you want a clean, rich, smooth surfaced beeswax candle
- Flakes, cracks, dark wax or white spots – you want consistently smooth unpitted or unpocked beeswax
- Holes or cavities inside the candle – you want solid core beeswax candles for superior burning
